THE POWER OF WORD AND MEDIA

At WIL, our objective is to address the fundamental need of human kind and all subsequent growth i.e., Communication.

While the communication need has been addressed from all other perspectives especially so in the field of telecommunications, the most vital ingredient of communication has largely remained out of the purview of science and business. Traditionally languages have been closely associated with religion and all growth was recorded and passed on through various mediums. The medium was important but the focus was more on language. However with changing times, somewhere along the line, the medium became more important. All scientific and technological development continued to make the medium stronger and more powerful. But the content, the source, the language itself remained largely untouched. Let us understand how the combination of two can create a solutions, which becomes a multiplying factor to all types of products, services, solutions and utilities.

Language:
The need to communicate is the source of all words. Every human being communicates in his own unique way and makes his own contribution to the wealth of words. In that sense, there are as many ways of expressions as are thoughts. These collective expressions of a community develop into a "Language".

Media:
"Media" is the most powerful means of communication.. the closest to real life. A medium to express.. not only the reality but even the dreams and the imaginations. A medium to present how a fantasy or a vision if turned to reality will look like!

So while the world speaks not one but thousands of languages, a communication can happen only in the source language - an art in itself. And the task to present it in another language, while keeping its soul unharmed is yet more difficult and Art.. so that the spirit is not - Lost in Translation.

And while on one hand expressions in any language form liberates and help the world evolve, they also tend to be the most limiting factor in growth. The ideal scenario from the perspective of convenience would be when everyone would understand, think, speak, write and communicate in one universal language. However, such a situation will also leave the world bereft of all its variety, culture, and colors. It would be a sad scenario when the whole world will be enveloped in a shade of grey, devoid of all its colorfulness.. and one thing but is sure, that such a day will never come.. not till such time the humanity lasts.

The limiting factor of language is so powerful that industry in general has started to feel the acute shortage of an organized solution in this field. A product, although universal in its utility, gets limited simply because the product manual has not been translated into multiple languages. A movie, which holds the power to entertain and move people across countries, continents and geographical boundaries; remains geographically challenged without a multilingual format. (And the irony is that, a multilingual format fresh production is not only unviable, but also loses its creative charm when reproduced). Or for that matter, a service or solutions provider, whose services/solutions can cater to the needs of all of humanity remains limited in one area, just because of the language factor. The multiplying effects of a refined language solution are immense. A service in English is limited to the English speaking segment. When multiplied with 1000 languages and it grows a minimum of 1000 times its potential.

And the biggest irony to the above description is the products, creations, services, utilities and solutions, which are totally ignorant of the fact what effect language conversion can make to it. There is immense wealth of knowledge available in the world, waiting for others to bring it out of the language limitations so that the benefits could be shared by the whole of humanity.

Industry in general has started to translate its manuals, products, creations, services, utilities and solutions into multiple languages. However, there is no global solutions provider worth its salt to cater to the rapidly growing demand. Each spoken word needs a translation.. not in one but in all the languages of the world at some or the other point of time. While a lot is being done in various fields, including language solutions and a host of language solution agencies do exist, there seems to be a serious dearth of an organized effort to handle the volumes of translations (needed for all technical and non technical works) with élan and under one roof. World over, translation is still like a commission agent's work which empanels translators on assignment basis and work only as the middle link between the client and the translator. At the most there are agencies, which recruit professional translators and specialize in a particular language. But an organized, in-house institution of multilingual and multicultural translators backed by technical support to transfer the translated information in an appropriate media fuelled by latest technology which can deliver start-to-finish solution to most of client's needs is something still unheard of.

Where Technology Fails

Technology has succeeded in creating software applications and hardware gizmos which try to localize a content, but they themselves are either elementary in nature or fail to address the entire issue in totality. By nature, language is such a phenomenon which can never be automated. One can never have a machine/software application which can express one's thought in the most refined way, just like a human being can. There are certain areas where science and technology meet a dead end and language is one of them. There is only this much that technology can do and that fits perfectly when one talks about languages. Till such time that the human thoughts and expressions can be communicated through a machine in the most refined manner, no such machine/software application can be invented which can translate the same content in another language. All a machine can do is to aid in the translation process by providing references, cutting down on typing/writing time and by creating a better, convenient and efficient work environment. This is precisely the reason, why all software based translation applications suggest that human translations are the best and all they can do is to assist in the process of translation. Thus, Translation, by far remains and will continue to remain one such area, which can never be automated. And hence it remains as exclusive a field, which will never be replaced by any machine, not today, never tomorrow. The human element and their subsequent skill thereof will forever remain to serve as the guiding ingredient of a good, precise and meaningful translation.

WORDS INFOCOM LIMITED is the first step in that direction. In a country most at ease with multilingual diversities (with 114 popular languages and dialects), and which has emerged as the favorite destination of global Business Processes with its extremely talented manpower and linguistic skills, the eight years of continuous success of WORDS is a definite indicator of the huge demand in the sector.

Media, by far is not only one of the biggest industry worldwide but also a sector which is still trying to get organized. Work in the sector is still done on a Project Basis and standardization parameters as per international standards are yet to get fully defined for this sector.

The objective and vision of WORDS INFOCOM LIMITED is to address the demand in the language solutions segment by effective use of Media technology. While industry in general uses Media as a medium to communicate and disseminate information about themselves, the premise behind WIL's solutions is to cater to the Media while simultaneously harnessing its power of information dissemination. And in doing so, not only will it give back to Media its dues, it will also start the process of defining standard parameters of work flow which will forever bear a lasting impression on the course of the world's future.
